Britain’s foremost designer, Paul Smith is renowned for his creative aesthetic, which combines tradition and modernity. Having opened his first standalone shop in Melbourne in 2012, this new shop is his second location in Australia.
True to the Paul Smith ethos of placing importance on individuality, the façade is finished in red, pink and orange, inspired by Luis Barragan, with a sunshine cheekily drawn into the render. Looking back to his roots, a brass inlayed cube measuring three metres by three metres depicts the size of Paul’s first shop and is placed in the centre of the concrete floor. The tailoring room has a reclaimed woodblock floor, similar to many Paul Smith shops, with the wood sourced from an old school in Cardiff, Wales.
Measuring 135 square meters, Paul Smith Sydney offers a perfectly curated selection of clothing, shoes blurred checks, knitted wools and indigo seersucker. Iconic Paul Smith designs feature alongside a cactus embroidered shirt, knitwear that nods to Paul’s love of cycling, paisley patterns and prints from the autumn/winter ‘16 catwalk.
Honouring the visual tone of Paul Smith shops worldwide, an eclectic picture wall – made up of artworks, objects and things Paul has been sent will feel at home alongside a range of found objects and art for sale including a table by Edward Wormley and works by artists including the British artist Aaron Kasmin and Danish artist, Allan Schmidt. As well as rare vintage artwork and posters from Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.
