Once referred to as the “the master of us all” by Christian Dior, Balenciaga, the Spanish designer known for his fine tailoring, opened his first boutique in San Sebastian, Spain in 1919. Now a power house behind some of the industries most coveted fashions, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London will pay homage to the designer as they prepare to host a stunning Balenciaga exhibition entitled, “Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion.” “Today there is great interest in the Balenciaga brand and its new creative director,” said Cassie Davies-Strodder, the curator of the exhibition. To date “[Balenciaga and Gvasalia] have not shied away from challenging the fashion system and the way they operate in it and [they], and the brand, will continue to transform and challenge the fashion industry norms.” Comprised of three sections: “Front of House,” “Workrooms” and “Balenciaga’s Legacy,” the show will feature over 100 items, 20 hats, collection sketches, photographs and fabrics samples crafted and used by the master couturier and his more contemporary protégées: Nicolas Ghesquière, J.W. Anderson and Demna Gvasalia, the houses current creative director. Noted as the first and largest of of its kind in the UK, the collection was started by world renowned fashion photographer Cecil Beaton in the 1970s. Scheduled to open on Saturday, May 27, 2017, it marks the 80th anniversary of the unveiling of his famous fashion house in Paris. For tickets and more information, please visit www.vam.ac.uk
