Named by Artsy as one of the “Top 10 Living Artists of 2015” and by “Time” magazine as one of the 100 most influential people, Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese conceptual artist who’s long-lived career brought her success across the globe, is being commemorated in a traveling exhibition that kicks off at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, called, “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors.” “Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos,” said Yayoi Kusama of her namesake creations adapted from hallucinations she’d had since she was a child. “Polka dots are a way to infinity.”
Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, her early works were heavily influenced by abstract expressionism eventually leading her to pop art. Shifting from medium to medium, she finally embraced sculpture and installation as her fundamental cause and is seen today as one of leading champions of the avant-garde movement. With six shows across the US and Canada, the presentation will focus on her “Mirror/Infinity” rooms series featuring a collection of six installations that originated in 1963 alongside a selection of her other key works.
